Cut Your Chances Of A Fussy Baby: Take B12 During Pregnancy

Mothers who had the lowest level Vitamin B12 during pregnancy were up to 8 times more likely to have a fussy baby that cried excessively.

Low B12 moms may give birth to babies whose nervous systems are less developed.  B12 is necessary  for the baby to make the fatty nerve covering called myelin.  Myelin protects brain cells and makes normal nerve transmission possible. Infants with less myelin may be more irritable than other infants.

Good B12 levels are also necessary to make normal levels of melatonin, the sleep hormone.  A deficiency of melatonin interferes with normal sleep.

Connections To Postpartum Depression

High needs babies are linked to depressive symptoms in mothers, which may contribute to postpartum depression (PPD).  PPD is difficult for moms, but may also cause lasting negative effects in children.
