Dr. OZ: Is Carnosine the Skin Fountain Of Youth?

Posted by: Brooke | Posted on: February 17th, 2012 | 0 Comments

As Dr. Oz informed us last week, carnosine is a compound normally found in our bodies that declines as we get older.

Carnosine And The Aging Process

As we age, the proteins in our cells can get tangled with one another.  Our tissues become stiffer as the cells they are made of lose flexibility.  These tangles also cause markedly increased free radical production, setting off a firestorm of damage inside cells.

In real terms, this means stiffer arteries, wrinkled skin, eye damage, and a host of other age-related conditions.

Carnosine is a rare substance that can undo these tangles, which were generally thought to be irreversible.

The Skin Study

When Dr. Oz spoke about the benefits of carnosine for aging skin, he was referring to a study published last year in which participants were given either carnosine supplements or placebo for three months.  The study results showed that those receiving the carnosine supplements showed steady improvement in measurements of skin aging.

The researchers determined that carnosine was reversing protein tangles in the skin.
