A new study on omega-3’s and cognition in children shows just how important they are to our health.  Researchers looked at the ratio of omega-6’s to omega-3’s in 7 to 9 years olds and what effect, if any, it has on cognition.

The kids were given the Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Assessment Battery and had their diets analyzed.  They found that the ratio of omega-6’s to omega-3’s predicted scores on the test relating to working memory and planning.

Overall, those with more omega-3’s and less omega-6’s did better on the test.  Omega-3 fatty acids are involved in lowering inflammation in the body, including the brain.  Omega-6 fatty acids tend to increase inflammation when there isn’t enough omega-3 to balance it out.
