Rosemary Extract: New Research Says It Might Regrow Hair
Rosemary has long been a folk remedy for hair loss, but now there is scientific research to support the rumors.
In a study published this month, researchers gave testosterone to animals to slow down or stop their hair growth, mimicking what happens in the scalps of men with male pattern baldness. When rosemary leaf extract was applied topically to the animals' skin, their hair regrew.
The researchers determined that rosemary inhibited 5-alpha reductase, an enzyme that turns testosterone into DHT. DHT is the form of testosterone that inhibits hair growth.. The men's hair loss drug called Propecia acts by blocking the formation of DHT. In test tube studies, the rosemary extract inhibited the activity of 5-alpha reductase up to 94.6%.
In addition, scientists found that rosemary could keep DHT from docking at the cellular receptor sites where it does its damage. The researchers believe that rosemary extract may offer hope for hair loss.

Fruits and Vegetables Literally Make You More Good Looking
According to a recent study, a group of Caucasian and East Asian people who started eating three servings a day of fruits and vegetables were rated as healthier and more attractive looking than before the study began. Scientists say that this is because a group of antioxidants called carotenoids collect in the skin over time when we eat these foods and they actually add color to the skin. Vegetables like carrots contribute yellow carotenoids, while red bell peppers and tomatoes add rosy red coloring.
Scientists said that people with deeper skin tones would probably have a have a similar benefit, but they would need to consume more fruits and veggies to acquire enough carotenoids to make a visible difference due to other pigments in the skin.
The researchers theorized that this rosy skin color is one thing we as humans might look for and find attractive in potential mates. According to some of the more primitive parts of our brains, attractiveness equals health which equals fertility. A healthy, fertile mate has collected a bunch of these pigments from plentiful food, but has also retained them instead of using them up to fight illness or stress.
If carotenoids are indeed a signal to potential mates that we are desireable, we share this strategy with many other animals on the planet. Many colorful animals, such as brightly colored birds, collect carotenoids from their food supply and display them on their feathers, scales, or other parts. The more colorful you are the better looking you are to your fellow organisms.
You can also find the whole range of important carotenoids in supplement form.

Pine Bark Extract Anti-Aging For Skin
Women who took 75mg Pycnogenol, a pine bark extract, for 12 weeks experienced increases in skin elasticity and hydration. Dry skin decreased noticeably in women who had dry skin prior to the study.
Pycnogenol may work by increasing hyaluronic acid, a compound vital to the structure of skin cells. In this study, hyaluronic acid increased in skin by 44%.
The production of hyaluronic acid begins to decline at about age 30. This drop-off is linked with accelerating wrinkle development.

Dr. OZ: Is Carnosine the Skin Fountain Of Youth?
As Dr. Oz informed us last week, carnosine is a compound normally found in our bodies that declines as we get older.
Carnosine And The Aging Process
As we age, the proteins in our cells can get tangled with one another. Our tissues become stiffer as the cells they are made of lose flexibility. These tangles also cause markedly increased free radical production, setting off a firestorm of damage inside cells.
In real terms, this means stiffer arteries, wrinkled skin, eye damage, and a host of other age-related conditions.
Carnosine is a rare substance that can undo these tangles, which were generally thought to be irreversible.
The Skin Study
When Dr. Oz spoke about the benefits of carnosine for aging skin, he was referring to a study published last year in which participants were given either carnosine supplements or placebo for three months. The study results showed that those receiving the carnosine supplements showed steady improvement in measurements of skin aging.
The researchers determined that carnosine was reversing protein tangles in the skin.

Hair, Skin, and Nail Support
By the time you are 21, your collagen levels will have begun to decrease at the rate of 1% per year. The average woman will experience a 7% decrease in skin thickness every 10 years. At menopause, the average woman undergoes a loss of 30% of their skin’s collagen in the first five years. The loss of collagen is associated with increased fine lines and wrinkles, duller skin, weaker nails, and thinner, weaker hair.
Our bodies are made of 30% collagen. In skin, it’s 70% collagen. In cartilage it’s 70%, hair is 90% and bones are 30%. When there is not enough collagen, skin becomes wrinkly, joints are subject to damage and bones are more likely to be brittle. Essential for collagen formation are vitamin C as well as the amino acids l-proline and l-lysine
Biosil. A specific kind of silica known as choline stabilized orthosilic acid (also called Biosil) is uniquely effective for raising collagen levels. When women were given Biosil, they experience a decrease in wrinkle depth of 30% over the placebo, as well as an increase of skin elasticity of 89%. They also underwent significant improvement in nail strength and hair strength.
In a pilot study for hair loss, 94% of subjects experienced Biosil induced hair growth, with 66% of respondents noting that the results were visible by the second month. Improvement in texture and body was noted.
Biotin. Another nutrient that is involved in the health of our nails and hair is the b vitamin Biotin. A deficiency can lead to brittle, thinner nails and hair loss. A high potency supplement of this vitamin can easily correct this.
Carotenoids. In the most current research, the carotenoids astaxanthin, lycopene, lutein and zeaxanthin have shown to promote healthier and younger looking skin while also providing protection from the sun. An additional benefit is protection for your eyes.
- Astaxanthin. The most powerful antioxidant of the major carotenoids has a unique ability to protect all cell membrane layers at the same time. Sun burn exposure time with astaxanthin intake was increased 20%. It also reduces inflammation which can contribute to skin aging. Sources are algae derived extract or Krill (1.5% and the most efficient form). Recommended dose 4-12 mg. per day.
- Lutein & Zeaxanthin. Provides protection from UV radiation. Recent research showed 10mg of Floraglo Lutein increased elasticity 8%, hydration 30% and superficial oils 30%. Sources are dark greens and marigold (Floraglo extract). Recommended dose 10 mg per day.
- Lycopene. Double the UV protection of beta carotene. Dose 10-15 mg.
