Dr. Oz’s Favorite Supplements Of The Season

This past Friday, Dr Oz gave us a recap of his very favorite supplements for this season of the Dr. Oz show.

The Belly Blasters

Dr. Oz named  thermogenic 7-keto DHEA and Forskolin, as well as stress-busting Relora as the standouts in the belly busting arena.  Check out our original post on 7-keto and forskolin titled "Dr. OZ: 7-Keto, Forskolin, And Saffron."

Relora is a combination of two herbs, magnolia and philodendron, that can substantially reduce the the stress hormone cortisol.  Cortisol can push your metabolism out of whack, leaving you chubby and hungry.

The Appetite Suppressant

Satiereal Saffron took home the prize for best appetite suppressant.   We talked about the serotonin upping ability of saffron and its capacity to help you stop snacking in our original post here.

Dr. Oz's Top Cancer Fighters

Dr. Oz named IP-6 and Vitamin D as prime cancer prevention and support.  Inositol hexaphosphate, or IP-6, has been shown in animal studies to inhibit the growth of cancer cells, including colon, liver,  lung, and skin cancer.  Dr. Duncan  recommended taking 500mg of IP-6 twice daily, once in the morning and once at night.

As Dr. Oz has pointed out, vitamin  D is definitely good news for women:  Higher vitamin D levels are associated with a significantly lower risk of breast cancer as well as a better outcome for those who are already diagnosed.  Vitamin D is also associated with a lower risk of cervical cancer.  For both men and women, higher vitamin D levels are linked to a substantially lower risk of colon cancer.

Pycnogenol For Brown Spots and Age Spots on Dr. OZ

Pycnogenol For Skin On Dr. Oz

Well before Dr. Oz's May 15 show, Sundrops.com published a post on the amazing skin effects of Pycnogenol.  You can find our original post here.

On the Dr. Oz show yesterday, audience members guessed the age of guest dermatologist Dr. Joely Kauffmann. The average guess was 31 years old.  Dr. Kauffman's real age?  41!

Dr. Kauffman credited 50mg of  Pycnogenol Extract twice daily with keeping her skin looking so very young.

The Research

Pycnogenol is great in part because it increases a compound in the skin called hyaluronic acid.  Hyaluronic acid plumps skins and guards against oxidative damage and wrinkles.  After about age 30, our natural hyaluronic acid levels begin to decline.  In a 2012 study, three months supplementation with Pycnogenol increased hyaluronic acid by 44% in skin and significantly boosted elasticity and hydration.

Pycnogenol also helps to regenerate vitamins C and E in the skin to help fight free radical damage.

Applied topically, Pycnogenol has been studied for helping with discoloration and wrinkle prevention.  In a 2011 study, a mixture of vitamin C, vitamin E, evening primrose oil, and Pycnogenol was applied to the skin of hairless mice.  This study found that this antioxidant mixture reduced UV light induced wrinkles and skin hyperpigmentaton.  Scientists feel hopeful that this combination may similarly benefit human skin.

Dr. OZ Review: Pure Green Coffee Bean To Burn Fat Fast

On Thursday,  Dr. Oz turned our attention to the mega fat burner pure green coffee bean extract.   Folks, this one is looking like the real deal.  Dr. Oz first mentioned it a few weeks ago for blood pressure, and shortly after, Sundrops.com wrote about its efficacy for weight loss in the March 28 post "Dr. Oz's Green Coffee Bean: A Powerful Tool For Weight Loss."

The Study

To sum it up, overweight people lost body fat without having to diet, although they did stay physically active. Participants lost an average of 17.5 lbs and 16% body fat in 22 weeks.  This is a huge loss in body fat, especially for a group of people who continued to eat the same diet that contributed to their being overweight in the first place.

Daily calories averaged 2400 per day for the participants, an amount which would normally cause many people to gain weight.   The people in the study burned about 400 calories per day in exercise.

How Does Coffee Bean Work?

The magic compound in green coffee bean extract is called chlorogenic acid.  Chlorogenic  acid  helps burn body fat in at least two ways.  One way is that it helps control the rise in blood sugar you experience after you eat food.  A slower, lower rise in blood sugar stresses your metabolism less, keeps your cells from manufacturing as much body fat, and makes it easier to burn the body fat you already have.  Chlorogenic acid may also inhibit the activity of an enzyme that breaks down certain carbohydrates in your digestive tract,  leading to less sugar absorption from your food.

This is the type of metabolic change that promotes belly fat loss.

The Dose

The researchers tested two doses: 700mg and 1050mg, and found that 1050mg was slightly more effective than the 700mg dose. Dr. Oz recommends a dose of 800mg twice daily.

Dr. OZ: Butterbur For Allergies

In a segment on Tuesday's show about how to build up your energy, Dr. Oz  said that allergies are one thing that can actually sap your energy.  An herb called butterbur may help.

As Dr.  Oz said, the herbal extract butterbur has been put to the test for allergic symptoms in a series of trials and has emerged a clear winner.  In a 2005 study, butturbur was as effective as the popular allergy drug Allegra in relieving allergic nasal symptoms.

The researchers said that in light of their results and the results of several previous studies, butterbur should be considered a viable alternative to synthetic drugs in the management of allergic nasal symptoms.

Butterbur has other uses apart from allergies. Dr. Oz had recommended butterbur for migraine about a month ago on his pain remedies show.. See our post "Dr. Oz Pain Remedies: Zyflamend, Chinese Skullcap, Butterbur, and Bromelain."

We also wrote about how butterbur can reduce urinary urgency and frequency in our post  "Butterbur Decreased Urinary Frequency."

Dr. OZ: Forskolin For Weight Loss

Friday on the Dr. Oz show, weight loss expert Lisa Lynn added more insight about using Forskolin to lose weight.  While cautioning the audience that you need to eat a healthy diet and exercise in conjunction with Forskolin, Dr. Oz  and Lisa confirmed the fat burning properties of Forskolin.

Emily, a client of Lisa's, lost 20lbs on a combination of Forskolin, diet, and exercise over a period of 4 months and Lisa informed us that Forskolin speeds up your metabolism almost automatically.

 How Does Forskolin Work, Exactly?

Forskolin is the extract of a plant called coleus forskohlii, and works by flipping on a switch called cAMP.  When cAMP is set on high, it keeps you from making as much fat, and it dials up the process that burns the fat that you have.

Here is my original post about Dr. OZ and Forskolin.  Take a look at the results of the Forskolin weight loss study.

Dr. OZ: Chromium Polynicotinate, Blood Sugar, And Cravings

Sugar is addictive!  Maybe more addictive than cocaine.  In one study, animals chose sugar water over intravenous cocaine, and even cocaine addicted animals switched over to sugar the first chance they got.  Sugar stimulates the same pleasure centers of the brain as illegal drugs.  Just like a drug, repeated exposure can lead to cravings.

Sugar feels good, at least for a time, and for good reason.  Our distant ancestors had to consume every bit of honey and fruit they could get their hands on, lest they starve.  This must have been particularly true in women, who had to accumulate enough body fat to carry a pregnancy.  Perhaps this is why women tend to have more sugar cravings than men.

Can Chromium Polynicotinate Help With Cravings?

Chromium polynicotinate, known also as ChromeMate, is generally regarded as the most bioavailable form of chromium.  This form of the mineral has been shown to improve blood sugar regulation.   When you have eaten too much sugar to frequently, your body stops being able to regulate blood sugar as well as it used to.

Good blood sugar management means that the insulin in your body does a bang up job shuttling blood sugar inside your cells to be made into energy.  When your blood sugar management is subpar, your ability to make energy from the food you eat takes a hit.  This situation creates a curious set of effects that includes weight gain, excessive cravings, and blood sugar dysregulation.

The Research

In a study of 42 overweight women, 1000 mcg chromium per day improved blood sugar management, and reduced food intake, hunger and cravings all day.  The women in the study trended towards weight loss.

Dr. Oz: Gotu Kola, Horse Chestnut, and Horsetail

Yesterday, Dr. Oz gave us some new ideas for skin beauty.  Read on for some insights into his herbal recommendations.

Gotu kola

Cellulite is present to some degree in most adult women, but the unsightly dimpling is more apparent in some.  Scientists are only beginning to understand why cellulite occurs, but many believe it may have to do with how elastic your skin and connective tissue is.  Cellulite is also linked to circulation problems and local swelling of fat tissue. Gotu Kola has several different properties might be able to address both the swelling issues as well as the circulation and elasticity issues.

Circulation and Swelling

Gotu Kola has been researched for its role in the health of the tiny blood vessels called capillaries.  Sometimes capillaries will leak fluid, basically water, into the space surrounding the capillary, and then you have swelling in that area.   Researchers gave gotu kola to a group of women who had swelling because of capillary leakiness.  Swelling was measured by checking the size of the women's ankles before and after treatment.  After treatment with gotu kola all the women in the study had significantly smaller, less swollen ankles.

Collagen and Connective Tissue

In another study, when an exract of gotu kola called asaticoside was injected into animals, gotu kola caused the animal's skin to thicken, increased new blood flow to the new connective tissue, and increased nail and hair growth.  These are signs of new connective tissue growth and may indicate that gotu kola causes increased elasticity.  In fact, the sythesis of human collagen type I was accelerated in a laboratory setting by gotu kola.  Reduced type I collagen synthesis is associated with aging skin.

Vein Strength

Gotu Kola has also been studied for varicose veins.  Scientists believe gotu kola may help varicose veins by improving vascular tone.

Horse Chestnut

Compounds contained in horse chestnut seem to reduce swelling, combat inflammation, and improve sluggish circulation, all of which could be helpful for cellulite.  Inflammation is thought to be a causative factor in cellulite because damages connective tissue and increases capillary leakage. Horse Chestnut activates a certain cell type in the skin and connective tissue.  This cell, called a fibroblast, pulls connective tissue a littler tighter when activated, possibly smoothing out bumps and wrinkles.

Horsetail For Nails

Skip the horsetail and go for Biosil.  Horsetail provides silica, and silica is amazing for nails, but the silica in horsetail is barely absorbed by your body.  The silica in Biosil has been attached to another compound and this silica duo is easily absorbed.

Silica is a component of collagen, and it's a component that we often run short of, probably because it is so poorly absorbed.  When we don't have silica, we don't make collagen.  Happily, when we have extra silica, we tend to make extra collagen and you can see that rather quickly in the hardness of your nails.

Dr. OZ: Vinpocetine, Hawthorn, and Algae Cal Calcium For Memory, Blood Pressure, and Bones

This week, Dr. Oz brought us some tips to help with memory, blood pressure and bone strength.  Read on to find the real info behind the good doctor's suggestions.

Vinpocetine: An Extract Of Periwinkle

According to a 1999 study in the Alternative Medicine Review, vinpocetine may be most useful for the kind of memory problems and dementia found in people whose blood vessels don't bring enough enough blood to their brains.

This type of memory problem can be called vascular dementia. Vascular dementia is a common type of dementia and can happen after a stroke, when a blood vessel becomes blocked, or when aging, high blood pressure, or atherosclerosis act to narrow blood vessels in the brain.

Vinpocetine dilates blood vessels in the brain, providing hungry brain cells with oxygen.  In a study published in the Journal of the American Geriatric Society, vinpocetine improved learning, memory, and global measures of brain performance in people with mild to moderate vascular dementia.

Dr. Oz says the dose is 10mg three times per day.

Hawthorn For Blood Pressure and Cholesterol

Hawthorn may be beneficial for high blood pressure as well as high cholesterol.  In a 2006 study, hawthorn lowered blood pressure in a group of diiabetics.  In a different study with animals, hawthorn performed better than a statin drug in lowering cholesterol in animals eating a high cholesterol diet.

Dr. Oz's recommended dose is 150mg three times daily.

AlgaeCal: The Super Calcium

AlgaeCal is literally calcium made from Algae.  It is better for bones than rock based calcium, as Dr. Oz pointed out. Another name for rock based calcium is calcium carbonate like you find in Caltrate brand calcium. Because AlgaeCal is very porous with many tiny holes and much surface area, your digestive system can to work away at it more effectively and utilise less stomach acid in the process.

Many calciums, like the calcium carbonate Dr. Oz talked about, take lots of stomach acid to digest.  Not everyone has this much stomach acid, especially as we get older. This fact alone accounts for much of the difference in calcium absorption rates.

The bone density research with Algae Cal is promising. A University of Texas study involving postmenopausal women recorded a 2.18% gain in bone density within 6 months of using AlgaeCal.

Vitamin K2

Vitamin K2 is a new player on the bone density field. Vitamin K2 is different from from the regular vitamin K ( K1), which pertains mostly to blood clotting. K2 is a boon for bone density because it turns on proteins that remove calcium from the wrong places, like artery walls, and deposits calcium in the right places, like bones. It promotes bone building and slows bone loss.

It is beneficial both from a bone and a cardiovascular standpoint.  Researchers found that 45mcg MK-4 type vitamin K2 prevented additional fractures in patients with osteoporosis.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D is a huge factor for bone density. Vitamin D deficiency is very common and low levels are linked to poor bone density.

Dr. Oz: Schizandra, Skin, and Energy

Traditionally in China, Schizandra was held to make skin softer, more hydrated, and more radiant.  In fact, the herb was given to Chinese royalty to improve not only the appearance of the skin, but also to improve the function of the mind, as well as act as a sexual tonic. Shizandra is believed to sharpen memory and concentration, and increase alertness, all while being slightly calming.

Because of it's great track record in traditional Chinese medicine, we are eager to hear more research about the royal herb Schizandra Chinensis.
