Doctor Oz: Dr. Neal Barnard Plan to Prevent Alzheimer’s

Last week Dr. Oz had another M.D., Dr. Barnard, come discuss his plan to reduce your risk of Alzheimer's.  He mainly focused on heavy metals in the diet.

He was concerned that excess amounts of metals like iron would build up in the brain and increase risk.  He gave his plan which included eating a diet of mainly fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains.

The plan also included getting more vitamin E, B6, B12 and folate.  The three b vitamins are very important because they help to keep levels of homocysteine from getting too high.  Homocysteine can do a lot of damage at high levels. You can read our article on this here.

Doctor Oz and Chromium Polynicotinate

On his show yesterday, Dr. Oz spoke about using a chromium supplement for managing blood sugar and possibly weight loss as well.

The research on chromium is good and Dr. Oz is right to recommend it be part of our diet.  By helping to make insulin work better, it helps to keep blood sugar levels normal.  A study on people with insulin resistance who were then given chromium were able to improve their blood sugar levels within 24 hours.

We here at Sundrops have always spoken about the importance of maintaining normal blood sugar levels, not only for weight loss, but for overall health.  You can read more about our approach here.

Dr. Oz and Sleeping Pills

Dr. Oz warned on his show this week about the dangers of prescription sleeping pills.  He had doctors and patients talk about their negative experiences with them and the potential hazardous.

Sleep is so important to our health.  You can eat a great diet and exercise, but if you can’t get a good nights rest you’re not going to feel healthy.  Luckily there are natural options to help support our sleep.

A combination of magnolia and jujube extracts, commonly known as Seditol, has been researched for it’s benefits with sleep.  Research on Seditol shows it can help relax you to sleep, which can be especially helpful for those not sleeping due to excessive stress and anxiety.

Dr. Oz and Garcinia Cambogia

Recently, Dr. Oz recommended garcinia cambogia as an aid for weight loss. Garcinia is a fruit also known as tamarind. Dr. Oz reports that garcinia has traditionally been used by Malaysians to lower appetite.

According to Dr. Oz, people taking garcinia were able to to lose an average of 4 pounds per month with weight loss and dieting.  He also says that hydroxycitric acid (HCA), the active ingredient in garcinia, can increase weight loss in dieters by 2-3 times greater than placebo.

Dr. Oz says that some researchers have found that hydroxycitric acid can increase serotonin levels, which he says may help with mood, sleep, and lowering appetite.

HCA inhibits an enzyme that takes carbohydrates and makes fat out of them.  Blocking this enzyme also reduces cholesterol production.

We Have Green Coffee!

Earlier this year, Dr. Oz recommended green coffee bean extract for weight loss and blood sugar. See our earlier posts "Dr. Oz Review: Green Coffee Bean Extract To Burn Fat Fast" and also our post about green coffee and high blood pressure.

People taking green coffee bean extract to lose weight lost an average of 17.5 lbs and 16% body fat in 22 weeks, without changing their diets.  Try taking one pill 20-30 minutes before each meal, skipping your dinner dose if you are sensitive to caffeine.

Green coffee use was also linked to a drop in high blood pressure.

Dr. Oz: Glycine Powder For Insomnia

Thirty percent of the population suffers from insomnia.  This week on Dr. Oz, the good doctor spoke about research concerning the effect of the amino acid glycine on sleep.

Scientists gave insomniac subjects 3 grams of glycine at bedtime and then rated them the next day on a scale for fatigue and sleepiness.  The subjects reported themselves to be significantly less fatigued than placebo subjects, with a trend towards less sleepiness.  The glycine subjects reported higher levels of vigilance the next day.

Glycine may improve sleep by lowering core body temperature.  Human beings naturally lower their body temperatures at night and an elevated temperature may keep us from sleeping soundly.

Dr. Oz’s Favorite Supplements Of The Season

This past Friday, Dr Oz gave us a recap of his very favorite supplements for this season of the Dr. Oz show.

The Belly Blasters

Dr. Oz named 7-keto DHEA and Forskolin, as well as stress-reducing Relora as the standouts in the belly busting arena.  Check out our original post on 7-keto and forskolin titled "Dr. OZ: 7-Keto, Forskolin, And Saffron."

Relora is a combination of two herbs, magnolia and phelodendron, that can diminish the levels of the stress hormone cortisol.  Cortisol can push your metabolism out of whack, leaving you chubbier and hungrier.

The Appetite Suppressant

Satiereal Saffron took home the prize for best appetite suppressant.   We wrote about the serotonin boosting properties of saffron and its capacity to help you stop snacking in our original post here.

Dr. Oz's Top Cancer Fighters

Dr. Oz named IP-6 and Vitamin D as prime cancer prevention and support.  Inositol hexaphosphate, or IP-6, has been shown in animal studies to inhibit the growth of cancer cells, including colon, liver,  lung, and skin cancer.  On the show, Dr. Duncan recommended taking 500mg of IP-6 twice daily, once in the morning and once at night.

As Dr. Oz has pointed out, vitamin  D is definitely good news for women:  Higher vitamin D levels are associated with a significantly lower risk of breast cancer as well as a better outcome for those who are already diagnosed.  Vitamin D is also associated with a lower risk of cervical cancer.  For both men and women, higher vitamin D levels are linked to a substantially lower risk of colon cancer.

Pycnogenol For Brown Spots and Age Spots on Dr. OZ

Pycnogenol For Skin On Dr. Oz

Well before Dr. Oz’s May 15 show, Sundrops.com published a post on the amazing skin effects of Pycnogenol.  You can find our original post here.

On the Dr. Oz show yesterday, audience members guessed the age of guest dermatologist Dr. Joely Kauffmann. The average guess was 31 years old.  Dr. Kauffman’s real age?  41!

Dr. Kauffman credited 50mg of  Pycnogenol Extract twice daily with keeping her skin looking so very young.

The Research

Pycnogenol is great in part because it increases a compound in the skin called hyaluronic acid.  Hyaluronic acid plumps skins and guards against oxidative damage and wrinkles.  After about age 30, our natural hyaluronic acid levels begin to decline.  In a 2012 study, three months supplementation with Pycnogenol increased hyaluronic acid by 44% in skin and significantly boosted elasticity and hydration.

Pycnogenol also helps to regenerate vitamins C and E in the skin to help fight free radical damage.

Applied topically, Pycnogenol has been studied for helping with discoloration and wrinkle prevention.  In a 2011 study, a mixture of vitamin C, vitamin E, evening primrose oil, and Pycnogenol was applied to the skin of hairless mice.  This study found that this antioxidant mixture reduced UV light induced wrinkles and skin hyperpigmentaton.  Scientists feel hopeful that this combination may similarly benefit human skin.
