Fenugreek Increases Milk Production In New Mothers and Helps Newborns Gain Weight

In a 2011 study in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, a group of new moms was given a fenugreek tea to drink in the days following their babies’ births to hopefully promote breastmilk production.

Newborn babies typically lose weight after they are born, in part because the mother’s milk takes a few days to come in and in part because it is hard to tell exactly how much milk the baby is getting when the mother is breastfeeding the baby. While some weight loss is normal for infants, doctors get concerned with weight losses of more than 7% of the baby’s starting weight.

Breastmilk supply was increased in the fenugreek tea group of mothers, and their babies regained weight significantly faster than the group whose mothers had no fenugreek tea.
