A topic we are hearing more about is childhood obesity and insulin resistance.  Many different reasons for the rise have been offered and just as many solutions.

A new research study looked to see how omega-3’s would compare to a medication traditionally given to diabetics, metformin.  Two hundred youths who were obese and insulin resistant were given either metformin or omega-3’s for 12 weeks.

A the end of the study, omega-3’s were able to reduce blood sugar and insulin levels.  The authors concluded, “The results of this work suggest that omega-3 may be useful as an adjuvant therapy in obese children and adolescents with insulin resistance.”
