Winter is upon us and folks are getting their coats, sweaters and gloves out for the drop in temperature.  Many people are also finding this time of year emotionally difficult.  A type of depression becomes active called Seasonal Affective Disorder, also known as SAD.

The reasons behind this disorder are still being discovered, but one line of research is looking at the role of melatonin, our sleep hormone.

Fifty eight adults with this condition were given either 2mg of time-released melatonin or a placebo to take 1-2 hours before their bedtimes for three weeks.

Those in the melatonin group had better quality of sleep and vitality than placebo.
